PGY1 Pharmacy Practice
The PGY-1 pharmacy residency conducted by Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, North Carolina is accredited by ASHP. The purpose of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
PGY2 Emergency Medicine
The PGY-2 emergency medicine pharmacy residency conducted by Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, North Carolina is accredited by ASHP. The purpose of the PGY2 pharmacy residency program, as stated in the PGY2 standards, is to build upon a Doctor of Pharmacy education and PGY1 pharmacy residency experience to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in emergency medicine.
Philosophy
Residents will acquire substantial knowledge required for skillful problem solving, refine their problem solving strategies, strengthen their professional values and attitudes, and advance the growth of their clinical judgment. The instructional emphasis is on the progressive development of clinical judgment, a process begun in the advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE or clerkships) of the professional school years, but requiring further extensive practice, self-reflection, and shaping of decision-making skills fostered by feedback on performance. The residency year provides a fertile environment for accelerating growth beyond entry level professional competence through supervised practice under the guidance of model practitioners. Specifically, residents will be held responsible and accountable for acquiring these outcome competencies: managing and improving the medication-use process, providing evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with the interdisciplinary team, exercising leadership and practice management, demonstrating project management skills, providing medication and practice-related education/training, and utilizing medical informatics.

Eric Locklear, PharmD, BS, MS, MBA, BCPS
Dr. Eric Locklear is Pharmacy Director and Human Protections Administrator for UNC Health Southeastern. He serves as a preceptor for Practice Management and Antimicrobial Stewardship for PGY1, PGY2 and APPE students. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

PGY1 Residency program director
Erica Atkinson, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Erica Atkinson, PharmD, BCPS is an internal medicine clinical pharmacist and program director for the PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency. She earned her Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC and completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Dr. Atkinson became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 2016 and is the primary preceptor for Internal Medicine I and II for the PGY1 program. Dr. Atkinson serves on the Residency Advisory Committee and Research Project Committee for the PGY1 residency program, as well as, oversees the Medication Reconciliation Program.

PGY2 Emergency medicine residency program director
Alexas Polk, PharmD, BCEMP, BCPS
Dr. Alexas Polk is an emergency medicine clinical pharmacist and program director for the PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the South Carolina College of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System in Savannah, GA. Subsequently, Dr. Polk went on to complete her PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, NC. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and serves as the primary preceptor for PGY1, PGY2 and APPE students in emergency medicine.
